Science Expo Winners
 |

|
| Each year, the
Akron Section sponsors winners of the Akron City Science Expo
at the high school and middle school levels for students who
choose to use plastics as a major component in their project.
The high school winner for this year is Christine Ferguson,
a junior at Ellet High School. Her topic was "Durability of
Plastics Under Simulated Conditions." (see photo at left) Christina's
sponsoring teacher is Ms Susan Rhoades. The middle school winner
is Craig Blike, a student at Akron's Miller South Middle School.
His project, titled "All Fired Up," was a study of the flammability
of children's pajamas made of cotton, nylon, polyester, and
nylon/polyester blend. His sponsoring teacher is Ms. Louise
Heydorn. This year, there were ten projects at the high school
level and three at the middle school level. This represented
about 10% of the projects in the science fair. The high school
winner received a $100 prize. The middle school winner received
$50. Each of the sponsoring teachers received a matching award.

October 18, 1999, Meeting
Dr. Yocum, from the American Plastics Council, drove home the news that we must all be better ambassadors of the plastics industry by being activist and not just reactive. Alan Robbins, founder of Plastic Lumber, is an excellent example of successful activism. He brought us up to date on his successes in establishing ASTM test methods for an industry in its infancy.
